RTD code of conduct in focus as riders demand change DENVER (KDVR) — RTD's Board of Directors was holding a vote Tuesday to fortify the "Respect the Ride Code Of Conduct." The meeting comes after ongoing demand for enforcement based on reports of violent threats, lewd behavior, drug use and trashed buses and trains. Rider Brandon Cobb uses the train daily and witnesses open drug use and threatening behavior. “With the kids that ride, that's not safe at all, so I think they should limit the people that are doing drugs on the train and just cut that immediately,” Cobb said. Camping ban passes in Douglas County Bus drivers and passengers made public comments at the meeting, citing incidents of assault, discoveries of human waste on seats and on stairs, noxious smoke from drugs inhaled on the train or bus and dangerous threats. One community worker said many low-income residents have taken out high-interest predatory loans to buy a car rather than risk riding the bus. RTD’s board received letters from metro-area city officials asking f...

It gained momentum on Monday and is now estimated at more than 2,500 acres.Mina Bolton, a spokesperson with the fire response, said conditions on Monday didn’t help. "It was a perfect storm, if you will," Bolton said. “The fuels, the slope, the wind — all aligned and really drove that fire and expanded that rapidly.”  Fire 200 miles west of Denver sparks questions She said they haven’t seen that same amount of growth on Tuesday, but the terrain is posing challenges for firefighters.“It’s rocky, it’s steep and it just hard to access with the fuels,” Bolton said. There are no evacuation orders in place yet, but homeowner Tamara Castellari said she could see the flames from her backyard Monday night. "We’ve lived here 6 and a half year...

Windsor reopens river tubing access WINDSOR, Colo. (KDVR) — A popular waterway in Northern Colorado is once again allowing visitors to rent or use inner tubes. Windsor town officials have opened the access point at the Eastman Park River Experience. Russia mutiny revives stagnant talk of increasing Ukraine aid in Congress The turmoil in Russia is giving Ukraine’s allies on Capitol Hill new ammunition in the fight to secure more weapons and aid for Kyiv. It’s still unclear what the brief mercenary rebellion will mean for Russia and Ukraine, but lawmakers argue the schism between Vladimir Putin and Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin is a sign Western-supplied weapons are working, and that Washington needs to navigate skepticism in Congress to keep the tap open.Bipartisan pressure to spend more on the military was already brewing in Congress, and specifically on more aid to Ukraine, even if that means breaking the debt limit deal that capped defense funding at the administration’s request of $886 billion. On Friday, hours before Prigozhin’s forces charged into Russia, the Senate Armed Services Committee released its version of the defense policy bill and called on President Joe Biden to seek more money for Ukraine.“I would hope what [the Wagner rebellion] does is reinforce to members of Congr...

Cavanaugh & James: Mass. patients need choices, not roadblocks Expectant mothers need quick access to care when labor begins, but their options are dwindling in Massachusetts. If UMass Memorial Health receives regulatory approval to close its Leominster maternity ward on Sept. 22, the shutdown would continue an alarming trend.Birth centers, midwifery practices and hospital obstetric units have disappeared across the state in recent years, along with behavioral health and primary care clinics. Policymakers have vowed to intervene to stop the bleeding, but proposed solutions are upside down.Rather than making it easier for health care investors to launch and run new facilities in Massachusetts, state lawmakers want to make it harder for existing providers to close. One measure, S.736/H.1175, would extend the mandatory wait time to shut down “essential health services” from six months to one year — not counting 30 days of advance notice for hospital staff, labor unions and local officials. Before filing any of this paperwork and starting the clock,...
