CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — A few years back, Sage Brook Carbone was attending a powwow at the Mashantucket Western Pequot reservation in Connecticut when she noticed signs in the Pequot language.Carbone, a citizen of the Northern Narragansett Indian Tribe of Rhode Island, thought back to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she has lived for much of her life. She never saw any street signs honoring Native Americans, nor any featuring Indigenous languages. She submitted to city officials the idea of adding Native American translations to city street signs. Residents approved her plan and will install about 70 signs featuring the language of the Massachusett Tribe, which English settlers encountered upon their arrival.“What a great, universal way of teaching language,” she said of the project done in consultation with a a member of the Massachusett Tribe and other Native Americans.“We see multiple languages written almost everywhere, but not on municipal signage,” she said. “Living on a numbe...Commission mobilises more than €65 million for member states to support people fleeing Russian aggression against Ukraine

The European Commission has decided last week to make available over €65 million from the Asylum Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) to support Bulgaria, Czechia, Poland, and Romania in hosting people fleeing the Russian aggression against Ukraine. This decision follows a targeted call for financing of the projects aiming to alleviate the pressure on the reception capacity of these Member States and to help them ensure that beneficiaries of temporary protection receive the necessary support, services and assistance. The European Union is currently hosting more than 4.1 million people benefiting from temporary protection, which was triggered for the first time shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and in September this year further extended until March 2025. The Commission continues to take measures to support people fleeing Ukraine and member states hosting them. Bulgaria, Czechia, Poland, and Romania can now use this additional funding from the EU budget to h...L.A. Dodger-themed Christmas house an annual spectacle

From the latest addition of the Shohei Ohtani display to the Houston Astro’s Grinch and the Vin Scully tribute, every sign is handcrafted by Adam himself. The Celtics had a brief scare in Tuesday’s loss to the Warriors when Jayson Tatum went hobbling off the court to the locker room in the first quarter. With 7:45 left in the first quarter, Tatum inadvertently stepped on the foot of Golden State’s Brandin Podziemski and rolled his left ankle. The Celtics star immediately limped off to the locker room to get it tested before returning for the start of the second quarter.Tatum did not seem to be quite himself for the remainder of the game, however, as he finished with 15 points on just 5-for-17 shooting, including 2-for-9 from 3-point range, though he did have seven assists. He told reporters in San Francisco after the game that the ankle was swollen, and it admitted it affected him while playing.“Not to make any excuses, but when you sprain your ankle it kind of swells up and it’s just stiff,” Tatum told reporters. “So it’s tough to … it just makes it a little tougher to move. SAN DIEGO -- More than 100 rideshare drivers fed up over what they say are low wages and unfair percentage splits protested Tuesday night near the San Diego International Airport. The protest happened at the rideshare parking lot near the Rental Car Center, where drivers park and wait for rides.“20 rides and I make $90 in 12 hours, it’s horrible,” said Juan Rivera, who organized the grassroots effort alerting other drivers on Whatsapp to meet at 6 p.m. if they wanted to air any concerns.Kenny Breazil has been driving for eight years and has over 17,000 rides under his belt.“When I started, they were taking 20% and we were getting 80%. Now they’re taking half or more,” he said. “I have a couple extra jobs. I have to work a thousand jobs now.”The drivers who protested say they used to make about $400 a day. Now, some argue they make $150 for a 12-hour day. After paying to fill up his gas tank, driver Eyad Alsawah said it ends up being $90 for the day. These California cities ...Latest news
