One year of Trump’s praise for authoritarians

Published Mon, 25 Nov 2024 04:08:13 GMT

One year of Trump’s praise for authoritarians Donald Trump’s affinity for authoritarian figures is well established. When he was in the White House, he boasted of his relationships with people like North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin. But Trump’s latest praise for some of the world’s biggest strongmen and his comment that he wouldn’t be a dictator “except for Day One” has alarmed Trump’s critics, who say they fear the former president would veer even further to the right if re-elected. They point to Trump calling his political enemies “vermin,” a dehumanizing word that echoes fascist dictators such as Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, and second-term plans being drafted by Trump allies they claim would upend the norms of government. On Saturday night in New Hampshire, Trump repeated a phrase about undocumented immigrants — that they are “poisoning the blood of our country” — that echoes racist manifestos and prompted President Joe Biden’s campaign to release a statement saying Trump “parroted A...

Uniting Europe’s resources to put greener aircraft into service by 2035 Europe is striving to bring cleaner aircraft into service by 2035 to maintain its global industrial leadership and to be on track for climate-neutrality in aviation by 2050.The strategic importance of Europe’s aviation sector is clear — it generates more than 3.5 million jobs across Europe and in 2022 it contributed €258 billion to European GDP. The sector is committed to addressing aviation’s environmental footprint, which currently accounts for approximately 2.5 percent of global CO2 emissions and is expected to rise, given that global air transport is projected to grow by around 3-4 percent annually until 2050.Clean Aviation, co-funded by the European Union through Horizon Europe and the major European private aviation stakeholders, will deliver key disruptive technological innovations by 2030. These innovations will support the entry-into-service of pioneering greener aircraft by 2035. Yet, the journey toward sustainable aviation is not a solo mission that a single country or an...

Apple to halt sales of some Apple Watches in US New York (CNN) — Apple plans to stop selling some versions of the Apple Watch in the United States as soon as this week to get ahead of what could be one of the most momentous patent disputes in years. The company confirmed to CNN it will no longer be selling its Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, starting Thursday on Apple.com and from retail locations after December 24.The decision to take one of its most popular products off the shelf follows an ongoing dispute with medical device maker Masimo over its blood oxygen feature. Apple has routinely marketed its smartwatch as a life-saving device, which has helped launch the Apple Watch into the stratosphere, making it the most popular watch sold around the world. But its skirmish with Masimo threatens to undermine that.In October, the US International Trade Commission ruled that Apple was in violation of Masimo’s pulse oximeter patent, which uses light-based technology to read blood-oxygen levels.
